“King of the Mile”, Hicham El Guerrouj, is Awarded a Dubai Star

21 Jan 2020

Hicham El Guerrouj is known as one of the fastest middle-distance runners in history. During his international debut at the Junior World Championship, Guerrouj secured third place in the 5000 metres. The following years came with an influx of triumphs; he represented Morocco in the 1994 IAAF World Road Relay Championships and consistently bettered his personal best for the 1500 metres event. However, during his first race at the 1996 Olympics, Guerrouj came across an unfortunate fall in the final 400-metre stretch and ended up finishing last, after spending the entire race tailing his strongest adversary, Noureddine Morceli. El Guerrouj beat Morceli at the 1500 metres race only a month later, during the Grand Prix final in Milan. He was the first athlete to do so in four years. El Guerrouj retired in 2006, but his stellar record times continue to set the benchmark for greatness in the running.
